A lot of people are becoming more interested in nursing as a career. Today, it has evolved as the role nurses used to play in the past has changed over time. Nurses these days are taking challenging roles than what they had been used to in the past and are beginning to become more specialized compared to the past. The field of nursing has generally grown to introduce more areas than what used to be a few years ago. These days, specialties like medical-surgery nurses, labor, delivery, psychiatric, pediatric have been introduced by most institutions teaching nursing to ensure they have the right skills after leaving nursing school.

In the past, nurses were only subjected to care for their patients. The role today has shifted in recent years as they have more responsibilities and most respected in being part of the medical team. Their activities include assessing a patient’s condition to make informed decisions on the results received.

Today’s nurses study various nursing fields that they wish to pursue. They include: -

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Associate’s Degree Registered Nurse (ADRN or ADN)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree Registered Nurse (BSRN or BSN)
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN)

Having expanded their skills most of them have been seen to run their clinics where they now diagnose and prescribe drugs to patients while others are in high-level management roles training other student nurses and junior doctors in medical schools.

These types of responsibilities could not have been imagined by most people as for the nurses to carry them and make every contribution to the National Health Service.

Think of what you want to be before enrolling. Nurses work in every field that one may think of, i.e. Urgent care facilities, rural towns, old-age care centers etc. most schools prepare nursing students to work on a variety of things to have a clear view of what is required of them on every field.

It is important to first get to know why you opted to become a nurse in the first place. Some are inspired by breath-taking events that may have occurred, having a feeling to make an impact on other people’s lives or maybe, an analysis on your side towards an area of specialization.

A lot of nursing institutions have students working directly with patients while some put you in an office to manage others in patient care. Understanding the work one wants to do is a key step in choosing your field. There are many areas that one can specialize in of which all are valuable and fulfilling in their own ways.

Conduct a research on the fields you want to dwell into. What are the requirements needed? Some of the students complete their BSN degree after completion of their RN (Registered) program then proceed afterward while others go directly into the specialty they want to pursue after passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

Every path a nursing student wishes to take is unique as the specialties are necessary to the health of populations all over the world. Also, the personality type of a nurse correlates with the job role the student wants to achieve. Some would love to work closely with patients while others are comfortable taking the role of a leader thus becoming a great manager in future.

Nursing jobs are always demanding in nature. One is usually guaranteed greater success by undertaking this kind of jobs. He or she is expected to be rewarded by the number of challenges she handles swiftly. It may be through an increment of one’s salary or more job promotions.

One should note that the specialty course chosen requires skills, training for one to succeed. He or she will be certified at the end of the course.

Lastly, these days nurses require more educational requirements for them to be allowed to pursue their specialty. Education plays a key part in the rewards that come with majoring.
