The government plays a critical role in protecting and advocating the health needs of the society particularly delivering high-quality healthcare to all. Since dependence on market or private sector alone cannot ensure that all Americans have access to quality healthcare, it is important for the government to protect the health needs of its citizens through supplementing the healthcare market where there exist gaps and controlling the market where is inefficiency and inequality (Tang, Eisenberg & Meyer, 2014). As an attempt to achieve the ultimate goal of providing high quality care, it is important to develop a strong relationships between the federal, state and private sectors. Medicaid is a government sponsored health care insurance plan that serves more than 42 million individuals from poor background and in need of healthcare services to attain healthy growth and development objectives or attain special healthcare requirements (Corrigan, Eden & Smith, 2020). The program provides cover to low-income individuals who meet the specified criteria including children, disabled adults, and pregnant women among others. However the cover varies from state to state based on the maximum income for eligibility.
The state of Massachusetts has a total of 6.6 million people as per 2020 statistics. More than 20% of the MA population is low-income but only 24% of MA population is currently enrolled in Medicaid health cover. This implies the 2 out of 9 adults aged between 19 and 24 years, 1 out of 3 children, 5 out of 8 nursing home residents, 4 out of 9 individuals with disability and 1 out 4 Medicare beneficiaries are insured under Medicaid health cover (Brom, Salsberry & Graham, 2018). As a nurse practitioner working in Massachusetts, I would advocate for an increase in Medicaid cover for all eligible individuals as an attempt to attain to goal of providing quality, accessible and affordable care for all Massachusetts’ citizens (Tang, Eisenberg & Meyer, 2014). In addition, I would request the federal and state government to increase the finances allocated to each Medicaid beneficiary. This will ensure that Massachusetts citizens are able to receive care even for expensive care services that are not included in the Medicaid care cover.
