Should doctors or nurses be allowed to make decisions about when to end a patients’life?

Should doctors be allowed to make decisions about when to end a patient life

Doctors and nurses are very highly skilled medical practitioners, therefore after diagnosis and treatment, they are able to make a justified conclusion as to how and when the patient may or may not recover and offer next steps options to the families and loved ones of the patient. They are able to tell through longtime practice and scientific evidence whether a patient will recover from a traumatic injury or chronic illness, and then be able to advise the family on what to do next.

In most cases, if the outcome of the patient needs resuscitation due to their condition, both patient and the family members are able to decide. They can sign official documents to either resuscitate or not based on the wishes of the patient directly. If the patient is caught unawares, for example, if they have been involved in an accident, then the decision to either continue medical sustenance or relieve them lies with their closest relative. This could either be a spouse, or parents of the patient. In cases where the patient has no spouse, or parents in charge, their next of kin is in charge of those duties.

The process of making that decision is often difficult one to make. Even after the patient has given their express conditions. Resuscitation has such a forceful impact on the body as physicians do their best to revive a patient, by getting their heart pumping. It often involves hard and heavy pushes in and outward of the chest and electric volts that course through the body to shock the system to get the heart beating again. In some cases, patents get bruised or broken ribs in the process.

A nurse or doctor should only get the privileges to decide when to end a patient’s life if the person being treated is unclaimed with no next of kin. It would be unlawful to end a person’s life without the consent of their loved ones. More so, it is illegal in most countries. Euthanasia is considered to be an assisted suicide in most countries and the parties involved can get sentenced to several years of jail time. In the case of the nurse or doctor, their licenses can be revoked to no longer practice medicine.

It is unethical to play the role of god when all things considered physicians have no place deciding who gets to live or die, but instead, their focus should be on saving lives. In cases whereby, the patient has requested the physicians to assist them to ‘end their life’, authorities need to be notified, to prevent a suicide from happening. In rational cases, the doctor can assist the patient to get the help requested from the institutions and countries that allow for euthanasia.

Euthanasia is a request to end one’s own life, with medical assistance. While, removing a patient from life support, or consenting to a DNR ‘Do not resuscitate’ form, is different. In both they are following the will of the patient, however, one is frequently illegal, while the other is a medically responsible course of action. This is because, the patient has already come to either a vegetal state, that they can only be supported by a machine or they have succumbed to their illness and have chosen not to be resuscitated.

The bottom line is that the decision to discontinue a person’s life is very personal and significant. So much that, it needs deep thought and contemplation before making a decision to pull the plug, or keep the patient on life support. Relatives who decide to terminate the life support before they are ready to fall into depression from feelings of guilt for having made a hasty decision. Whereas, sometimes the case presents itself as not having any other choice, and that also needs careful consideration.

Should obese nurses be forced to diet or lose their jobs as they set a bad example for patients?

Should obese nurses be forced to diet or lose their jobs as they set a bad example for patients?

Diet, is a personal choice. Just like career, lifestyle and which car model you drive. Some people enjoy an active healthy lifestyle, while some find it hard to leave their beds. Others would prefer a burger and friends to a chicken salad with cherry tomatoes. It all comes down to choice. Whether you cycle to work, take public transport or drive there in the comfort of your car.

Someone's weight and health is a personal matter. Now while many people may see it fit to discuss peoples weight and health status or conditions, what a person chooses to consume or how they choose to live is up to them. Education and a good attitude are the first to change your life for the better. Now while you may worry your child, spouse or nurse will eat themselves into diabetes or obesity, the way they treat their bodies is their own business.

When it comes down to it, a nurse is very educated on the human anatomy. She or he is trained to give care to people who are suffering from various illnesses and even how to diagnose diseases based on the symptoms you are facing. Therefore, should a nurse become obese it is no surprise to them, nor are they unaware of how to respond to curb their weight gain.

They know the poor side effects that come with an unhealthy diet. From poor skin complexion and breakouts to weight gain in unwanted areas and the difficulties that come with killing a bad habit. It also means probable heart conditions, high cholesterol, diabetes and other irreversible medical conditions from being overweight. A nurse who is overweight is unexpected. They are constantly on their feet doing rounds with doctors and moving around the hospital checking on patients, administering treatment or rushing to aid in an emergency.

However, some people are prone to gaining weight faster than others and they also have a hard time shedding the weight. The key to staying healthy and fit is being constant. For a nurse who is overweight, she should take the next steps to manage her weight if she feels insecure or unhappy with the weight he or she has gained. The nurse can also seek the support of friends and family who can keep her accountable for the steps she is taking to become healthier.

There are some people who are confident in their weight and hence, do not see the need to lose the weight. In such cases, they may need to be diagnosed in order to see the danger of their weight gain. How it can affect their health and adversely and commit to a better lifestyle through a health and fitness plan. This can be the small things first. By watching what they consume. Water instead of soda, and more cooked meals, instead of fried fast food.

What should not be done, is forcing them to diet or fire them as a result of a lack of commitment to a weight plan. This can affect them in a negative way, both emotionally and their physical health. It will definitely affect their self-esteem, to be jobless and at risk of obese related diseases. This will make them feel hopeless when they are unable to cater to their bills and other necessities. Additionally, some people tend to eat when stressed, and being out of a job may even lead to depression and worse health from binge eating.

More than that, firing someone from their job as a result of something personal such as poor health or weight gain, if it is not stipulated in the contract can lead to a lawsuit. It would be unlawful to terminate someone based on their looks alone. This matter is one that needs to be dealt with delicately, so as not to offend the nurse and have a healthy productive relationship instead.

How dangerous is a concussion?

How Dangerous Are Concussions

A concussion is caused by a blow to the head. It causes the person to become temporarily unconscious, sometimes confused after a violent shock to the head. It is a type of traumatic brain injury from a jolt to the head, that causes the head or the brain to move quickly back and forth. They are often as a result of a fight where boxing was involved, an accident or another sport for example, hockey or baseball, where a bat was accidentally coming into contact with the head during the game.

Motorcyclist and cyclist may also experience concussions after falling off their bikes violently. Hence, they put on helmets for protective purposes. Concussions are delicate and serious matter. Boxers who have had several head injuries including concussions, have gone on to experience health issues related to the brain long after they are done playing the competitive sport.

The sudden movement that causes a concussion is because of the ways the brain moves around or twists in the skull. This creates chemical changes in the brain and sometimes it also stretches and damages the brain cells, causing harm. A concussion is usually not life threatening and are described as a mild brain injury. However, the effects can be very serious. In some cases, it is possible to have a concussion and not realize it. Instead, chalking it down to dizziness.

Some of the symptoms of a concussive traumatic brain injury include having a headache, loss of memory and confusion. For some, they even forget the event that caused the traumatic brain injury, also referred to as TBI. Dizziness and a ringing in the ears, are additional symptoms. If the blow was especially violent, some people may feel nauseated, vomit, have slurred speech after and a delayed response to questions. At this point they appear dazed and fatigued from the blow. This is especially true in competitive sports.

Victims of a concussion have complained on lower concentration and poor memory recollection. Sometimes, their personalities may change, and thet seem irritable more often. They are also prone to sensitivity light and noises. It is important to recognize that some symptoms are in fact delayed. They do not show up immediately, therefore a medical check up is required if any of these symptoms occur just to be sure.

The person who suffered a concussion may also have disorders to taste and smell, which you may recognize when having a meal or cooking together. They may also appear to be depressed and have problems adjusting to different scenarios. While they sleep, they may have trouble getting full rest. It is very dangerous for athletes to return to a game or playing field if they are feeling these kinds of symptoms. This also includes vigorous activity, which should be avoided when feeling a concussion.

A concussion can also occur in children. They may have difficulty expressing themselves, making it hard for parents or doctors to fully understand the problem. In such cases, children and adolescents should be examined by an experienced pediatric in this field of managing concussions.

The cause behind a concussion is the fact that the brain has the consistency of gelatin. It is cushioned from the everyday movements, and bumps that could pose a threat to the brain’s health by the cerebrospinal fluid which is inside our scalp. The violent jolt you experience cause your brain to slide back and forth against the walls of your skull. Such a violent shake caused by an accident can cause injury, which sometimes affects the brain function.

This is what essentially appears as the symptoms of a concussion. There could bleeding, in and around your brain that could cause prolonged drowsiness and confusion. Brain bleeds can be fatal, and if you are aware of the symptoms of a concussion, it is best to seek medical attention immediately.

Are multivitamin pills really as good as eating the right foods?

Are multivitamin pills really as good as eating the right foods?

Multivitamins are substitutes that contain the vitamins, and beneficial components found in foods and fruits; made available in tablet or pill form for the person to swallow. They are also referred to as supplements, in that they supply the body with the vitamins that they need. They are very popular for those concerned with health and many people believe that they do improve health and make up for poor eating habits, such as not eating enough fruits and vegetables. They are also believed to keep chronic illnesses at bay.

The body needs these multivitamins for reproductive health in both men and women, maintenance, that is to give you the energy to forge on during the day and growth perhaps for hair and healthy nails, as well as regular bodily functions like metabolism for a regular bowel movement which is healthy for everyone.

These multivitamins aside from the vitamins they carry in each pill also contain other ingredients like herbs, fatty acids and amino acids in varying quantities. Naturally occurring vitamins are found in food, and to know what foods contain which vitamins it is best to do research. Also, it would be advisable to see a doctor and find out what vitamins you may be lacking in to help nourish your body for improved health.

Vitamins are best-taken wit meals for improved digestion after which they will be absorbed into the body with ease. If you are taking vitamins for energy it is best to take them in the morning before the start of your day. This is also because taking vitamins at night can interfere with your sleep. While some people may think it is safe to take vitamins daily, it is not recommended to do so. Instead, twice a week for example when it comes to fish oil is the recommended dosage.

Now whether these supplements are actually beneficial or not depends on the different brands and products. Their component percentage varies. To encourage more people to indulge, companies have found new forms of the vitamins to attract people to purchase, and take. They also come in powder form that can be added to water or a beverage (see instructions for recommendations first), as well as chewable gummies often found even in different flavors and liquids as well. The latter two forms are especially convenient and popular among parents for their children.

They are available for purchase in pharmacies, different discount stores, and large supermarkets as well as online retailers. It is good to note that the nutrients from multivitamins may be derived from real foods as well as being synthetically created in laboratories. Meaning that the only way to know if the nutrients are real or not is up to the brand. If you would like to be certain about what you are consuming, it would be better to consume real foods, real fruit, and vegetables to get the minerals and nutrients you need.

Heart disease is one of the most common causes of death in the world. As a result, many people have chosen to take multivitamins to keep heart disease at bay, however, there is no clear evidence. Some scientists have found some evidence that it may reduce the risk of heart disease, while some have not. A recent study has found that among women, taking multivitamins regularly reduces the risk of heart disease, but the same does not apply to men dying from heart disease.

When it comes to taking supplements to reduce the risk of getting cancer, the evidence is also limited. While some studies have found a link to multivitamins and the reduced risk of cancer, some have found that consuming these multivitamins instead increases the risk of getting cancer. A research was done on a total of 47,000 people after 5 random controlled trials showed that for men the risk of cancer is reduced by 31 pc but the same does not apply to women.

What is the best way to decrease infant mortality rates in developing nations?

What is the best way to decrease infant mortality rates in developing nations?

Infant mortality rates in developing nations are devastatingly high. The numbers are mostly from the less developed rural areas. In these areas, there are poorly facilitated medical clinics if any at all.

The same areas also lack properly trained medical physicians, with most of them in the area being interns or doctors in their early stage residency. They are sent on government allocation to help lower level hospitals and clinics to manage the high numbers of patients, to the low ratio of medical staff.

As a result, medical workers are often, overworked and underpaid. Leaving the patients in the crucial care of only a few who may not be well equipped to help the patients, especially if they are in critical condition or experience an unexpected emergency. For expectant mothers, having an emergency during birth can be a life and death situation, and unfortunately, sometimes both mother and child die.

It is not uncommon to find women giving birth at home. Although it is not allowed, some of these women live at a very long distance from the closest maternity clinic or hospital. Making It a painful and cumbersome journey to walk to the clinic while in labor. They also cannot afford to sleep in the hospital as they await the due date due to long distance because, some of the clinics are unsafe at night especially because of tribal clashes, and raids that are ongoing in some of those rural areas.

These women who also live in abject poverty, do not have adequate food and sufficient water to nourish the body during pregnancy with the required vitamins and supplements. For such women, their children are sometimes born with deformities to be it internal or external, or they are born smaller than normal. In some cases, the children die soon after birth due to lack of sufficient nutrients or medical care when born with special conditions and otherwise.

Women are also often discharged on the same day due to lack of sufficient facilities like beds, beddings and even food for the overnight stay new mothers require. They are sent home the next day with painkillers and instructions on how to care for the child. It is very difficult to access good medical care even after birth for the child. Unless it is a hospital fully stocked with government supplies and medicine, it is hard to even access vaccines for the child. This is why children in rural areas often get diseases that have vaccines or die early (infant mortality), as they are not able to recover from the harsh conditions, and illnesses they may get infected with.

Governments have tried to decrease the infant mortality rate by holding regular free vaccines to children in these areas, and often at subsidized prices. In some cases, non-governmental organizations engage in community work which involves alleviating the poverty and sickness that these women in rural areas face. They do engage in medical activities by providing medical aid in the forms of medicine that are administered and physical medical care.

As a solution, mobile clinics have been introduced in some developing nations. They are equipped like a level five (fully equipped) hospital, to cater to women and children, in areas that are further away from hospitals and clinics. This was introduced as one way to curb the high number of infant mortalities, and to reduce the risk of mothers losing their lives as well. These women received first class care to serve both of them during the maternity period, to childbirth.

The women receive information and supplements that will improve their health. They are educated on how to respond to any alarming symptoms and how to recognize them. This has, in turn, helped mothers to deliver safely and become aware of any activities that may put both her and the child at risk.
