Identify and elaborate on one or two lessons you have learned from our study of United States history that affect you today in your daily life and/or work.
Expansion and the Mexican War of 1846-1848 were two of the most fascinating things for me to learn about. Knowing these historical truths allowed me to see our forefathers, the people who constructed and settled the area that became the United States of America, in a more realistic light. The Mexican people, who remain a modest, polite, and hard-working people, were subjected to a terrible injustice. In some aspects, Mexican culture and the society I grew up in are similar, and these historical truths made me feel even closer to their country out of sympathy and knowledge of their ancestry.
Expansion's price tag was another eye-opener in the course "The Cost of Expansion." I had heard of the colonies, but I had no clue what made them unique or where they came from. It was fascinating to read about the origins of our country and its people. As a foreigner in a new (to me) country, I could identify with the people who lived in those times since I was once a foreigner in a new (to me) land, trying to discover myself, go ahead, and prosper in this new life. There is so much value and significance in this knowledge that I could not help but enjoy it.
Provide advice to the next group of students who will be taking this course.
Taking history is a very simple course. It's easy to dismiss it as uninteresting since it provides information that most people don't need to know, yet nothing could be farther from the truth. If you're willing to put in the effort, the class may be a lot of fun and educational. Learning about historical information I did not know has been a terrific educational experience. It's been an eye-opener and a widening of my perspective. To be able to express an opinion on a subject that is not very close to your heart is a wonderful feeling. This course and my instructor's help have been invaluable to me, and for that, I am quite thankful. Thank you for your kind words!
How has this course affected you today in your daily life and/or work?
I have gained a deeper appreciation for the people and places I'm surrounded by. Some truths regarding our country's past were shocking. In popular culture, the United States is often represented as a utopian nation with a pristine history, populated only by the world's most admirable individuals. I still feel that the United States is a wonderful, powerful, and fantastic nation, but knowing about the country's less-than-stellar past has given me a better understanding of it.
What should incoming students be aware of regarding this class?
It's always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the course content ahead of time. If you wait until the last minute to read and study, you might miss out on a lot of important information. Good time management is essential for successful discussion and paper writing. If you don't give this lesson the attention it deserves, it's easy to fall behind.

What strategies did you use that they may find useful?
Starting at least one week in advance of the due date was my best practice. When it comes to writing a well-researched piece, life's daily responsibilities might get in the way. Good research and a lot of knowledge are needed for these subjects, and taking shortcuts won't achieve anything. Monday is the greatest day to start a debate. At the beginning of the week, it's best to get history talks out of the way so that you can respond to your peers within a day or two after posting. If you stick to this timetable, you will be done with most of your assigned work by Wednesday, and you'll have the rest of the week to finish it or work on something else.
What advice can you provide to help them earn an A?
History is not a subject that can be taught in a short period of time. You will need to know a lot of information to complete your homework and other tasks, so plan on spending a lot of time reading. Once again, slashing corners won't help you. This will only help you in the long run, so don't be afraid to take advantage of it. Having a wide range of knowledge in both science and the humanities can only make a person more intriguing to converse with. As far as I'm concerned, we should never be afraid to take advantage of what we've been given.
