Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War Of 1846

Manifest Destiny was the American belief that all the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean was destined to be owned by the United States. The two events that impacted Manifest Destiny and the westward expansion of the United States were Lewis and Clark, and the Independence of Texas.

To head the expedition into the Louisiana territory, Jefferson appointed his friend and personal secretary, twenty-nine-year-old army captain Meriwether Lewis, who was instructed to form a Corps of Discovery. Lewis in turn selected William Clark, who had once been his commanding officer, to help him lead the group (Lawrence, 2019). The expedition of Lewis and Clark was made to find a trading route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, also known as the Northwest Passage. While this passage was never found, Lewis and Clark made allies with Native Americans, explored the land that would later become the Louisiana Territory, and brought back specimens of plants and animals from the new territory. Lewis and Clark’s journey would inspire others to venture out exploring and claiming land for the United States.

Manifest Destiny claimed all the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific for the United States, however, Mexico had control of the land that is now Texas. Many Americans were moving to Texas and were hoping to create a slave state. Mexico outlawed slavery, which led to Texans declaring independence from Mexico. This resulted in war between Texas and Mexico. Texas was defeated by Mexico in the battle of the Alamo, however, an outnumbered group of Texans fought and defeated the Mexican army, which resulted in Mexico allowing Texas to become independent of Mexico. Texas then joined the United States, which further led to a mass movement of people going west and carrying out the Manifest Destiny.
