REFLECTIVE JOURNAL2

1. Regarding how you investigate these norms, first you must have patience to listen to them about the information they have without first correcting them. It is after this that you have the chance to ask questions. Also being a healthcare practitioner, when talking directly to the patient and to the family, you must use a low calm voice and also build a friendly environment for them in order to have a continuous conversation which eliminates conflict of interest and information. Actual and perceived social standards, as well as lay beliefs about how the world works, can have a tremendous impact on human conduct. Thus, health theories are assumptions about the world and how they influence health related goal setting and behaviors.

2. The first challenge to the application of evidence based practice in the field of nursing is a knowledge gap. For successful implementation all stakeholders within the health field have to be involved. The nurses are supposed to be on the front line in getting new information about advancements in their area. This can only be accomplished by adopting lifelong learning. It is difficult for the implementation of evidence based practice to occur if the nurses do not have the latest information about what is expected of them. It is therefore important to change their attitude towards continuous nursing education in order to acquire the necessary expertise to facilitate this process.

The second challenge is the lack of goodwill from the government. The members of the political class have to be brought on board in order for application of evidence based practice to be successful. Implementation of such strategies may require the purchase of new equipment and infrastructure in the hospital. Lack of appropriate infrastructure in the hospital can be an impediment towards the process. It is therefore vital to have government support for expertise and equipment to be made available and to ensure success.

3. If I'm in a scenario where I have to make a decision that goes against my values and beliefs, I'll do what's best for the patients and what's vital in patient care ethics. My values and beliefs are embodied in my thoughts and actions. It should not prevent people from receiving the proper treatment they deserve. My ideals and convictions are superseded by the principles of beneficence, faithfulness, and fairness for patients.

4. It is critical to have interests and passions outside of nursing since they have deviate nurses' minds to give leisure outside of their usual work. It allows the brain to think on something other than the turmoil of nursing, which is beneficial to the nurse's health and mind. Nurses must first care for themselves before they can care for patients. If they are tired, they will be unable to offer adequate treatment to patients because they will be unable to think clearly, grasp the complexity of the patient's condition, or effectively assess the patients. Passion and hobbies provide for time away from the normal job, which aids in the prevention of professional burnout. To avoid burnout, I want to eat healthily, relax frequently, and exercise consistently. Because if I am exhausted, I will be unable to give care that meets the patient's expectations.

5. I have seen a lot of patients in my time as a nurse. So far, I've been able to speak with them well and give them with excellent care, but it doesn't rule out the possibility of encountering others who are more difficult to talk with or who require a little more work to comprehend. There are definitely certain areas where I can improve, such as understanding and communicating with patients' cultures and beliefs. Knowing the culture and beliefs of my patients, as well as avoiding using jargon that they would not understand while speaking with them, are some areas where I may improve.

6. Few strategies that I have read about successful time management, successful study strategies and Self-care: Strategies for personal and professional success are skimming, looking for main ideas and discovering patterns and relationship for study strategy; writing essential information, condensing and organizing notes for note-taking; and carrying 10-20 note cards every day, keeping review period Short for time management, and carrying charts in folder with ‘know’ and ‘don’t know’ labeled for personal and professional success. I am willing to put effort on each and everything that I have learned from the Vital Skills book because there are always places for improvements in every aspect of the study and life. The benefits of putting vital skills into practice is that it will help me succeed as a nursing student which will prepare me as a better nurse to provide patient care. And the challenge would be whether I would be able to do it instantly or it will take me some time to put skills into practice.

7. I have learned lots of information in last 3-5 weeks of the class. But in last three weeks, the biggest changes in understanding nursing profession are nurses also have professional boundaries, the HIPAA and confidentiality policies for nurses, ethical boundaries. Now, I have better understanding on patient advocacy, patient’s confidentiality, informed consent, beneficence, ethical dilemmas that as a nurse I may face and now I know how to handle those situations. I also learned about test taking strategies which will allow me to do well in my exams in future and importance of drug calculation. I will apply everything that I have learned from this course in my life to take care of patients and help them gain their optimal healthy life as well as mine. I will use my skills to change the view other people for nursing profession, encourage and motivate people to live healthy and longer life.
