The Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies are essential in ensuring a seamless progression through all levels of nursing based on consensus competencies which include transitioning nurses into their practice settings. There are ten core competencies highlighted in the document including patient-centred care, professionalism, leadership and safety among others. The two most important core competencies in my future career are patient-centred care and safety.
Patient-centred will be crucial in my career due to various factors. Patient-centred care will create an opportunity to increase patient satisfaction and ensure that I create a professional bond with my patients. Secondly, patient-centred care will boost my productivity and confidence when working since I will consider the views of the patients. Additionally, patient-centred care will be critical in contributing to the reputation of the health care facility. Patient-centred care is associated with quality care, reduced readmission rates and person-centred care which are in-line with the vision, mission and objectives of most health facilities.
The second core competencies that will have a major impact in my career is safety. Medication errors are among the leading causes of death in the United States. Patients are also exposed to falls, injuries and in-hospital infections which endanger their lives. I believe ensuring the safety of all patients will be critical in the delivery of quality care hence the core competency will enable me to create a good environment for my patients.
AACN essentials are critical in boosting innovation and excellence in nursing. The essentials ensure the implementation of quality in nursing education programs. The AACN BSN essential that will be most important in improving quality in my future nursing practice is informatics and technology. I believe that nursing practice can only succeed only if the nursing professional is willing to adopt the most recent and appropriate technology. Based on the AACN BSN essential, I will always be aware of the most current and innovative nursing programs and machines hence ensure patient satisfaction, high quality care and reduce readmission rates. Examples of technologies in nursing that have transformed the delivery of care include automated IV pumps, smart beds, steth IO smartphone stethoscope and electronic health records among others. I will strive to ensure that learn how to use advanced technologies hence embrace continuous professional development.
